‘Doctor Who’ returns to the big screen in two-night event featuring Season 9 prequel

There are still only preliminary plans to make a full-fledged Doctor Who movie — but that won’t stop the cult TV series from conquering the big screen

Doctor Who is set to take over the box office once again with a special two-night event coming to theaters ahead of the show’s Season 9 premiere. What’s more, the futuristic show is headed into the third dimension.

BBC Worldwide and Fathom Events will broadcast a 3D version of Season 8’s two-part finale, “Dark Water”/”Death in Heaven,” in approximately 700 movie theaters across the U.S. on Sept. 15 and 16. Leaked Sony emails reveal ‘Doctor Who’ is bound for Hollywood

After Wikileaks published a searchable database of more than 30,000 documents and 173,000 emails from the Sony Pictures hack Thursday, it didn’t take long for previously undiscovered info to start leaking out

Several UK news outlets, including The Telegraph, discovered a thread of Sony emails which indicate that the company is interested in turning British sci-fi series Doctor Who into a Hollywood movie

In a January 2014 email from Sony Pictures’ president of International Production Andrea Wong to company CEO Michael Lynton, Wong claims there’s “tremendous interest” from the BBC to do a Doctor Who film.
