Wendy Davis Defends Controversial Wheelchair Ad That Criticizes Opponent

Democrat Wendy Davis defends a controversial wheelchair ad that attacks her opponent in the race for Texas governor. The ad criticizes Republican Greg Abbott for supposedly denying justice to victims though he won millions after he was paralyzed.

The state attorney general Abbott has been in a wheelchair since he was 26. He was hit by a tree while jogging and received a $ 10 million dollar settlement.

Davis said, “In 1984, Greg Abbott sought out and received justice following a horrible injury, rightly so…receiving millions of dollars. But then he turned around and built his career working to deny the very same justice that he received to fellow Texans rightly seeking it for themselves.”

The ad “Justice” released on Friday and has been negatively received from commenters on all sides of the political spectrum and disability rights activists. Notably, Texas Republicans have demanded it to be taken off the air.

The Abbott campaign released a statement and video on Monday which called the ad “desperate and despicable.”

Others have defended the ad, including conservatives, stating that Abbott has used the wheel chair in commercials to humanize himself.

Abbott has a record of restricting access to courts as a judge and Texas attorney general.

At a press conference on Monday, Wendy Davis brought three disabled supporters, two in wheelchairs. She tried to focus the conversation on her point of running the ad to attack Abbott’s hypocrisy. “Greg Abbott got his justice. Why doesn’t he believe that a rape survivor or a person with a disability or a victim paralyzed forever…should get justice too? What makes Greg Abbott think it’s okay to deny them, his fellow Texans, the justice that he right went to court to receive?”

The success of the controversial wheelchair ad is currently known. Democrat pollster Joel Benenson, who is working with the Wendy Davis campaign, told the Texas Tribune that he’s “confident that the ad is effective and working.”
