A recent analysis has shown that kids today can’t run as fast or for as long as their parents could. They’re taking an average of an extra 90 seconds to run one mile, and cardiovascular fitness is down 5% since 1975.
That may not seem like a lot, but it is a concern. So it childhood obesity, which has to be a contributing factor.
But before we point the finger at poor physical education in schools (not that this isn’t a factor, because it probably is), maybe we should be looking at ourselves.
Isn’t it possible that kids are sedentary because we’re sedentary? If mom’s browsing Pinterest and dad’s on Facebook, who’s making sure the children are getting the exercise they need?
Of course, nobody wants their kid running about the neighborhood on their own, but that’s not an excuse to let them stay indoors gaming. Because given the choice, most kids would stay glued to their console.
Healthy habits learned at a young age are more likely to stick. Not only that, but children need role-models, and they will look to their parents for this. If time online is more important to you than time outdoors, it will be for your kids, too.
Nobody’s saying it’s easy, because it isn’t. Not many people want to go for a run after work, especially this time of year. It’s cold and it’s dark and you’re probably tired.
But swimming, dance classes, martial arts and the like are way more fun for kids anyway. And you can Facebook-stalk from your smartphone while you wait in the car, we suppose.
