Facebook’s Launch Of Video-Sharing App Slingshot Appears Imminent After App Store Sightings


Slingshot650The video-sharing application and Snapchat competitor that was first reported by Financial Times last month appears to be ready to “Slingshot” itself onto the iTunes App Store, as TechCrunch, The Verge, and sister blog Inside Facebook all caught glimpses of a listing for the new Slingshot app before Facebook began to remove it from the App Store, and AllFacebook spotted it on the App Store page for Malaysia (still live at the time of this post, with a release date of June 10).

The listing for Slingshot on the App Store for Malaysia said the Slingshot app was compatible with iOS 7.0 or later, and it would work on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, but it was optimized for the iPhone 5.

The description on the Malaysia App Store page read:

Slingshot lets you quickly share moments — little and big — with all your friends. Shoot a photo or video of what you’re up to and sling it to a bunch of people. They won’t be able to see your shot until they sling something back. Tap on a shot to react, or simply swipe it away.

  • Stay in touch: Capture photos and videos of moments you want to share with friends.
  • Go shot-for-shot: To unlock new shots, first you have to sling something back.
  • Enjoy it while it lasts: Once you swipe a shot away, it’ll no longer be viewable.
  • Send a quick reply: After unlocking a shot, respond with your reaction.
  • Get creative: Express yourself with captions and drawings.
  • Look when you want: View unlocked shots later if you’re busy.

At first glance, the biggest differentiator between Slingshot and competitors like Snapchat or Taptalk is the stipulation that users cannot see “shots” that are shared with them until they “sling” something back, which appears to be aimed at promoting engagement with the app.
