There is so much more going on in the sun than what the naked eye can see. This video, compiled by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio at the Goddard Space Flight Center, shows the wide range of light wavelengths that can be seen using a telescope. Based on data from NASA‘s Solar Dynamics Observatory, the wavelengths were converted into an image humans can see and then color-coded into the rainbow you see above. Each wavelength of light emanates from a different solar material at a specific temperature, giving scientists information about the different components of the sun’s surface and atmosphere.
For example, the yellow light typically comes from material on the surface of the sun at about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme ultraviolet light, typically colorized in green, comes from materials at about 11 million degrees Fahrenheit and provides a good way to examine solar flares. As the colors in the video sweep across the sun, notice how the textures of the sun change!
