Every year, some time after Thanksgiving, radio stations begin playing one song almost incessantly. No, I’m not talking about “Rudfolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer;” I’m talking about DJ Earworm‘s United States of Pop mashup, the one song designed to let us reflect on everything that happened in the past year (but really gets stuck so deep in our heads we have no room to think about anything else). Earworm’s 2013 Mashup, “Living the Fantasy,” has just hit YouTube.
Each United States of Pop mashup features the year’s 25 biggest hits as determined by Billboard’s weekly Hot 100 charts. Spotlighting Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” “Holy Grail” by Jay-Z, Lorde’s “Royals,” “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus, Rihanna’s “Stay,” “Roar” by Katy Perry and more, this year’s edition is mellow compared to Earworm’s previous editions – it’s not really a song you’d want to dance to. Check it out above and see if you like it.
The United States of Pop Mashups: Fun Facts
- Rihanna has appeared in every United States of Pop mashup since their debut in 2007, the only artist to do so
- Katy Perry has also graced every yearly mashup since she became popular, but unfortunately her first hit single “I Kissed a Girl” was not released until 2008
- Rihanna is the most-featured artist in the mashups, appearing in 12 different songs throughout the years
- Chris Brown appeared in four different songs in Earworm’s 2008 mashup, but hasn’t appeared in a mashup since (apparently the domestic violence charges didn’t help his cause)
