The social landscape changes fast. As technology and habits evolve, social media users gravitate toward different social networks. This infographic from eMarketer shows which social networks “will continue to gain momentum, while others necessarily lose ground,” according to AdWeek.

“Let’s face it: As much as we complain about those over-sharers who inundate us with baby photos and vacation snapshots, we’re still in love with social networking,” Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer’s principal analyst, told AdWeek. “More than half the U.S. population uses social networks regularly, and Facebook continues to lead the market. But pay attention to mobile social networking, where Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr are all significant players. That’s where the next phase of growth is happening.”

The infographic provides a breakdown of how eMarketer predicts market share will change for different U.S. demographics for the top social nets over 2015 and 2016.

Key take-aways:

The 65+ demographic will see the largest increase in social media users in the next two years.

The largest share of Twitter users are younger Millennials.

After the age of 34, people tend not to be Instagram users. I guess seniors are less into selfies.

5 Mistakes You Likely Make Online, and Solutions For Each


As someone who’s been in marketing communications for years, I have a special sixth sense when it comes to pointing out what’s going wrong in communication these days. After you’ve been in this space for a while, you’re guaranteed to come across things other people do on social media that drives you nuts. There are no right ways to use social media, agreed, but there are a few mistakes that you can definitely take care of.

Mistake #1) Linking Facebook to Twitter

So basically everything you share on Facebook also goes up on your Twitter. There are a whole lot of things that are wrong with this. The two most important ones being that the shortened link looks like a spam link, and that the text tends to get cut off on Twitter.

Solution: Disconnect! Head over to facebook.com/twitter and click “unlink” You can post the same link with a custom message by using Buffer or Hootsuite too.


Mistake #2) Beginning Tweets With The @ Symbol

Well, this means that your tweet is only reaching the person mentioned, and all your followers cannot see it. Only those who follow BOTH you and the tweep mentioned can see the tweet. This is a mistake that even big brands make.

Solution: Re-word the tweet to avoid starting with @, or start with a period in front of the @, like this, “[email protected] posted cupcake photos!”

Mistake #3) Overusing Hashtags on Twitter

Too many hashtags will make you look desperate, and “spammy” #No one #Wants to #Read #Anything that #Looks like this. My eyes hurt just reading that. Well balanced hashtags are not scoffed at, but with a limit of 140 characters, more than 3 seem like an overkill.

Solution: Stick to 2-3 hashtags towards the end of your tweet.


Mistake #4) Posting Too Many Photos on Instagram

There is nothing wrong with posting multiple times to your Instagram account, but posting content too close together is extremely putting off to many followers. While scrolling through too many images from your account, they will scroll right past them, or simply hit unfollow.

Solution: Space out your posts. This gives a chance to the followers to interact in a better way.

Mistake #5) Posting the Same Message Everywhere

Content serves different purposes on different platforms. Do not copy paste- this will only kill engagement as no one wants to read the same message on every platform. Twitter is kept short, Google Plus informative while Instagram needs something short and quirky.

Solution: Tweak your content to suit your audience on each platform.
