We also know that Roof’s massacre has triggered a fierce debate over whether the Confederate flag should continue to fly over the state’s capitol grounds. Some conservatives would have you believe the two issues are entirely separate: You can oppose Roof’s heinous CCC-inspired crime without demanding the removal of the flag.

There’s just one problem with that arument: The CCC played a key role keeping the Conferderate flag flying over South Carolina.

In fact, according to the founder and original leader of the CCC, Gordon Lee Baum, it was “almost entirely” thanks to his group that the Confederate flag still flew in the state capitol.
