Bury Your Cooler in the Sand to Keep Food and Drinks Cool at the Beach

Picnicking on the beach is always a fun idea, but a cooler full of snacks can get warm in the sun. Keep your food and drinks cold a little longer by burying your cooler in the sand.

This tip comes from The Kitchn, where they suggest:

Burying the cooler in sand helps provide additional insulation to help the cooler do its job more efficiently. If you can, find a shady spot or use an umbrella over the cooler, or throw any blankets or towels you’re not using over the cooler too. All of these things will help keep the cooler colder than if you just left it sitting on top of the sand in the hot sun.

Of course, you only want to bury it partially, so you can still open and close the lid (and not get too much sand in your cooler). And you probably want to fill in that hole before you pack up and leave, otherwise it could be a danger to fellow beachgoers. Check out the original post over at the link below.

Pre-Chill Your Cooler to Keep Drinks Cool Longer

Coolers are designed to retain temperature. Obviously, this is why they’re so great at keeping our drinks and food cold. And pre-chilling your cooler can help keep it cool longer.

This tip comes courtesy of Epicurious. They explain:

…if you store your cooler in the hot attic of your house or the hot garage, make sure you bring it in the house and open it up to air out a day before packing it. Ideally, you’ll want to get it cold. DJ Bell, the director of product marketing from Yeti Coolers, recommends dumping a “sacrificial” bag of ice in your empty cooler to chill it for at least a few hours before packing it. (Discard that ice before you start packing—it’s done its job.)
