With ‘Ash vs Evil Dead,’ Bruce Campbell resumes his groovy destiny quest




Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams has the final word in the first episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead, and it’s the one that summarizes the whole 40-minute experience: “Groovy.”

Decades ago, Campbell and his chin battled deadites in two different versions of Evil Dead, and an over-the-top trilogy-ender Army of Darkness. From there, Campbell and Ash parted ways — the actor going on to other B-movie heights, the character more or less remaining on ice (aside from a few comic book appearances here and there).

But the chanting from fans for Evil Dead 4 never ended, like curses hissed from the pages of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. (How there isn’t an actual San Diego Necronomic-Con event yet is beyond this writer’s understanding.) And while the lesson of the Ash vs. Evil Dead premiere boils down to something along the lines of “some books should stay closed,” the same lesson does not apply on a meta level.
