Will Deeper YouTube and G+ Integration Stamp Out Trolls?

In an effort to make the comments section more relevant to individual users, YouTube says it will surface the comments from people in your G+ circles.

“In the coming months, comments from people you care about will rise up where you can see them, while new tools will help video creators moderate conversations for welcome and unwelcome voices.”

The new “better” YouTube comments are designed to facilitate more relevant conversation, enable users to choose to make a conversation public or private, and make moderating the comments sections easier.

Google has been trying to inject civility into the YouTube comments for some time now. It’s often said that YouTube comment sections are the worst on the Internet and Google seems interested in stamping out trolls not only through reporting tools, but through more general social filtering. If you don’t know any trolls, you’ll be less likely to ever see any trolls.

This strategy creates a deeper integration between YouTube and G+ and essentially pushes the filter bubble into the comments section. With comments filtered for relevance and connectedness, you’re much more likely to see something important and less likely to see a drive-by slur.

“Let’s say you’re watching a video from Justin Timberlake. What type of video comment would be awesome to see: one from JT himself, one from people you care about who love the video…or one from just the last random person to stop by?”

JT, of course!
