A Deadpool movie seemed like something that would never happen, until 20th Century Fox announced today that is officially coming out. The ‘Merc with a Mouth’ film is slated for a 2016 February release.
The PG-13 rating dominates the world of superhero films, which is one of the reasons why no one thought a Deadpool flick would be a reality. There was also the fact that the antihero wasn’t going to cater to a mainstream audience, until James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy changed proved that thought wrong.
The last time Deadpool was on the big screen was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He was portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, and his performance didn’t do the underrated comic star any justice. However, there was CG test footage that leaked in July, also voiced and motion captured by Reynolds, which went over well with fans.
Reynolds is attached to this project again, and it already looks like the best superhero role he’ll play. Reynolds has been box office poison, since 2011’s Green Lantern and The Change Up, but hopefully he’ll change that by giving us the fourth wall breaking psycho we want.
Tim Miller, creator of the the visual effects for the title sequence of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is set to make his directorial debut with Deadpool. It is reported that the film will be using a Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick script, which also leaked and had a great response.
Deadpool is coming out fifteen months from now, meaning Fox isn’t thinking of it as their huge X-Men vehicles. Fox also has X-Men: Apocalypse and another Wolverine movie coming out too, after Deadpool. This is a good thing, because we’re getting the madness of Wade Wilson sooner.
Only time can tell if the 10 year hype for a Deadpool is deserved. If it is anything like the CG test footage, then viewers should be ready for a violent and hilarious ride.
