Australia says debris could confirm MH370 wreckage in the Indian Ocean

If the plane debris found Wednesday on the island of Reunion is confirmed to be part of the MH370 aircraft, the Australian government said Thursday it would be consistent with modelling indicating the plane remains are in the southern Indian Ocean

Radar data from the flight before it disappeared in March 2014 prompted authorities to focus on a search area far off the West Australian coast

The initial recovery effort involved 22 military aircraft and 19 ships, and in 2015, search vessels funded by Malaysia and Australia have been scouring the south Indian Ocean sea floor with sonar.

In a statement, Warren Truss, Australia’s deputy prime minister, said the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) was working with the French and American transport authorities and plane manufacturer Boeing on the examination of the plane part, under the leadership of Malaysia. Read more…
