Make a Battery Out of a Cola Can and a Penny

While it won’t power your home or anything requiring a ton of electricity, you can use a cola can and a penny to create a battery. It might get you out of a bind if you need a little bit of power and you’ve just got soda and some change.

YouTuber and Instructables user Go Repairs demonstrates how to make this happen in the video above. You only need the following:

  • A cola can
  • A copper coin (like a penny)
  • A can opener
  • Crocodile clips
  • Wire wool

With all of that, you just store the soda somewhere else (temporarily), remove the top of the can with the can opener, clean it out with wire wool, poor the soda back insides, clip one crocodile clip to the penny, the other to the edge of the can, and drop the penny into the cola. That quick and dirty soda battery can power a small LED. You’ll need to make a few of these to do much more than that, but now you know how to get a little power boost in a pinch when you need it.
