Gus Petro traveled the United States in 2012 and was shocked by the contrast of the empty places, like Death Valley and the Grand Canyon, and the densely populated places, like New York City. After publishing his photographs of the two places Petro decided to have some fun with Photoshop, and Merge was born.
In Merge, Petro creates a fairy tale city in America by plopping bustling New York into the vast Grand Canyon. As Gus writes on his website,
“In this project two opposite places are merged into one: New York City, where, it seems like, everyone wants to live there, and Grand Canyon / Death Valley, which are unlivable.”
Petro’s Photoshopping is seamless in these images, so much so that they can trick you into thinking they’re real. If you’ve ever been to New York, it will amaze you to see the city surrounded by so much nature.
