An NBA player sparks a social media firestorm in a sign of the times.

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

With these words, 12-year NBA veteran Jason Collins became the first active player in a major U.S. sport to reveal he’s gay. No, he doesn’t play in Portland, but to many he became a different kind of trail blazer this week.
His article, which appears in the latest Sports Illustrated, immediately drew an overwhelmingly positive response from celebrities, athletes and many on social media:

The revelation seems to be another sign of the times, as a few days later Rhode Island became the 10th U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage:

Musicians suddenly silenced

The deaths of rapper Chris Kelly (from the rap duo Kriss Kross) and Jeff Hanneman (guitarist for the rock group Slayer) caught the web off guard this week. The official Rolling Stone account was quick to pay tribute and gather the best reactions from the rap and rock communities :
