Social networks and blogs have American users spending a quarter of their online time & Facebook is the dominant network, according to the Nielsen Third Quarter social media report. In May 2011 alone, more than 53 billion minutes were spent Facebooking by Americans – i.e. a tally of 101 years!
Mobile usage has sparked the use of social networks. Close to 40% of social media users access social networks from their mobile phones.
The use of social networks app has increased by 30% in the past year. The third most downloaded app after games and weather is of social networks.
The Nielsen report states that the most active social networkers are women & people between 18-34. It has been noted that people over 55 are accessing social networks through mobile devices twice as much from last year.
