Reddit CEO Resigns Over Office Plan Disagreement (SocialTimes)
Reddit CEO Yishan Wong has resigned from his position as the site seeks “grow up,” reports Mike Isaac at The New York Times. Ellen Pao, the company’s head of strategic partnerships, will serve as interim CEO as the site looks for a replacement. Mashable According to a blog post from Sam Altman, the lead investor in the company’s most recent round of funding, “The reason was a disagreement with the board about a new office (location and amount of money to spend on a lease). To be clear, though, we didn’t ask or suggest that he resign — he decided to when we didn’t approve the new office plan.” The Wall Street Journal In his place, the company’s chief operating officer, Ellen Pao, a former partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, will act as interim CEO. Reddit’s co-founder Alexis Ohanian will return as executive chairman, and another executive, Dan McComas will become senior vice president of product. Adweek Ohanian said that since he founded Reddit in 2005 it has grown to 174 million users, and he believes it will continue to grow thanks to Wong’s groundwork. “Now at a little over 9 years old, with thousands of communities, Reddit is at an amazing inflection point, and I’m thrilled to return to help it achieve all that it can,” Ohanian wrote. TIME For Ohanian, part of the draw of returning to Reddit, which he calls “this baby I’ve watched grow for the last 10 years,” is getting its house in order after months of negative press. Aside from personnel issues, Reddit received heavy criticism over its initial reluctance to police a sub-community dedicated to sharing nude photographs of celebrities — some of them minors — that were obtained by hackers targeting users of Apple’s iCloud cloud storage system.
