Sometimes social media has a reputation for being a bit of a time suck. But it really doesn’t have to be if you know how to use your time wisely. For some that means scheduling a certain amount of time to check their social feeds, for others it might mean posting content at the most optimal times.
Building connections is a different beast though, usually requiring people to spend time engaging others in conversation online. According to an infographic from web hosting service WhoIsHostingThis, it’s possible to build more connections on LinkedIn in as little as five minutes per day.
The infographic focuses on six key areas for LinkedIn Networking success:
- Be active. Keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date. Update your status and comment on other status updates daily. Participate in discussion groups and answer questions.
- Make it personal. Send out requests to add people as a connection, but don’t just send out the stock “I’d like to add you to my personal network” requests, send a personalized message instead. And avoid sending messages to people you don’t know, on LinkedIn, this is considered abusing the system.
- Reach out. According to the infographic, more than 80 percent of LinkedIn users are in one group or another. So pick a few groups and stay active.
- Be smart. Share content relevant to people in your network. Ask questions to encourage discussion around the content.
- Ask for endorsements. More importantly, give away endorsements freely. However, be careful not to endorse someone you don’t know. And if someone endorses you, shoot them a quick thank you.
- Promote your profile. This can be as simple as including your LinkedIn URL in your email signature or including a share button on your website. If you’re at a networking event, mention that you’re on LinkedIn and encourage people to connect with you.
