Having the right roommate makes all the difference in the college experience. Get matched with someone who is too messy or too loud and you can kiss your perfect GPA goodbye. Conflict with roommates is one of the biggest reported stressors in college and is consistantly ranked among the top five reasons that students drop out. But finding a roommate isn’t just shooting in the dark and hoping your arrow lands on someone compatible, there are some guidelines you can follow to finding the perfect roomie for you.

First things first, you have to get to know yourself. What are your habits? Night owl or early bird? Are you an extrovert who loves to party or an introvert who prefers quiet? Once you identify your own qualities, you can begin to match them to potential roommates.

A word of caution: don’t room with your friends. It may seem like a great idea at first, but it could get very bad very quickly. If you’ve ever decided to room with one of your good friends, chances are that these days you aren’t really friends anymore. In fact, several universities have recognized the negative effects of friends becoming roommates and have set rules and bans against it. Stanford takes it even a step further and doesn’t disclose your roommates identity until move-in day.
