With 2013 just around the corner, Hulu has released their 2012 end-of-the-year revenue and subscriber stats. It’s been quite a year for the video streaming site, which is set to hit approximately $ 695 million in revenue by the end of the year, with over 3 million paying Hulu Plus subscribers.
Jason Kilar, Hulu CEO, writes on the Hulu blog, “We are closing on a big 2012. On behalf of the Hulu team, I would like to share some of our results. We’re so thanksful to our customers and for the trust they place in us each day, which is enabling us to deliver the below results.”
Kilar posted the below charts, revealing the company’s growth in revenue over the past five years as well as the number of Hulu Plus paying subscribers, quarterly since the fourth quarter of 2010. As you can see, the company has seen massive growth this year, up from just over $ 400 million in revenue last year to nearly $ 700 million this year. Much of this is thanks to the growth in Hulu Plus subscribers, which Kilar reports “has more than doubled over the past year.”
Hulu also became a lot more accessible in 2012. Kilar writes, “Hulu Plus was released on Apple TV, Nintendo Wii and Wii U, Windows 8 teblets, and a slew of new Android tablets and phones. Hulu Plus can now be accessed from more than 320 million Internet connected devices in the US (not including laptop and desktop computers).”
The company also grew their Hulu and Hulu Plus title offerings by 40%. They now offer over 60,000 TV episodes, 2,300 TV series and 50,000 hours of video from over 430 content partners.
On the advertising front, this year Hulu served more than 1,000 advertisers, a 28 percent increase over 2011.
Kilar attributes the companies success to both advertising and the Hulu Plus subscription service saying, “At Hulu, we are doubly fortunate in that we are at the crest of two massive waves that we believe will persist for the long term: the rise of online video advertising and the rise of online video subscription services.” It will be interesting to see what the streaming service has in store for 2013.
