We interviewed mother and Founder Tajinder Banwait about her business Urban Apothecary London. Read on to learn more about her ideas, candles and diffusers, and what the Mumpreneur award means to her. You can purchase Urban Apothecary products from John Lewis and Bergdof Goodman in New York.
How do you manage being a mother and owning your own company?
I have to do a good amount of juggling and being organised. I’m fortunate to have the support of my family who help a lot with my boys (aged 4 and 2). I work around the kids and not the other way around, and tend to work late once the boys are in bed.
What set off the idea for Urban Apothecary?
I wanted to buy a candle gift that was not only beautifully scented but beautifully packaged that could also be kept long after the wax had gone, but I could only find plain glass candle tumblers. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for the brand was born. I set to work finding the perfect apothecary glass jar for our signature collection and developed the fragrances at my kitchen table before presenting the brand to retailers.
Tell us a bit about the Mumpreneur award and what it specifically means to you?
The Mumpreneur awards are great and they not only recognise women in business but women who are mums first and foremost. It was my mother who nominated me for this award.
What makes the Urban Apothecary products unique?
The decorative glass we use to house our candles and our fragrances are what make Urban Apothecary unique. For example, our new honey candle collection comes in a beautiful glass beehive which can be re-used afterwards for your own honey, and our new preserve collection, which features scents like Lemon Curd and Bramble Jelly all in a 1920’s inspired preserve pot.
Do you have anything else lined-up for your business?
Yes, lots of exciting new things for 2015 but I can’t talk about them just yet!
If you had to choose one of your candles which scent would it be and from which collection?
That is very difficult… almost like asking who your favourite child is! I really love all of the candles in our collections otherwise I wouldn’t launch with any one of them, but if I had to choose one it would be the one from our very first collection called Signature and it is Fig. It is no ordinary fig… this fig is delicious and green and makes me feel so happy every time I smell it.
Do you have any tips for mothers and business women who want to do both?
I get asked this question quite a lot and the best advice I can give is if you can’t think about doing anything else then you have to go for it, whether you’re a mum or not, if you don’t you will regret it! Honestly, it’s hard doing both but it is extremely rewarding at the same time.
