5 Simple Steps Towards More Mindful Meetings

Are you one of the majority of people who hate meetings, because they go on too long, and never seem to be really relevant or productive? Meetings don’t have to be like this. In fact, meetings can and should be one of the most powerful tools to build creative teams and develop innovative ideas.

To get the most out of our meetings, what if we applied the principles of mindfulness and meditation to make our meetings more effective? Fast Company recently shared five simple steps to creating mindful meetings:

1. SELF CHECK-IN

All meetings participants should take a moment at the beginning of the meeting for a self check-in. By becoming aware of your mental state, you then have the option to choose the state you want to be in during the meeting.

2. GROUP CHECK-IN

Instead of jumping right in, take 5 minutes to check in. Go around the room, and invite people to take a few minutes to do whatever they need to do to get themselves to the level of presence that they would like to be at for this meeting.

3. STATE YOUR INTENTIONS

Let people know the intentions of the meeting. Too often, teams operate without being fully mindful of what they are actually doing there together.

4. DISTINGUISH THE PARTS

Meetings have multiple parts. Be clear about which part of the meeting you’re in, so you can use the right format and have everyone on the same page about what conversation you’re having.

5. WRAP IT UP

Spend five minutes at the end of the meeting to intentionally create clear agreement about what’s going to happen in the future.
