Over the past eight years, YouTube has grown at an astounding rate, localized in 53 countries and across 61 languages with over 72 hours of video uploaded every minute. But this evening, the online video giant announced that it has hit its biggest milestone yet—one billion monthly users.
According to a post on the YouTube blog, “Tens of thousands of partners have created channels that have found and built businesses for passionate, engaged audiences. Advertisers have taken notice: all of the Ad Age Top 100 brands are now running campaigns on YouTube. And today, we’re announcing a new milestone: YouTube now has more than a billion unique users every single month.”
To put that in perspective, nearly half of all people on the internet visit YouTube, from babies to great, great grandparents. If YouTube was a country, they report that they’d be the third largest in the world, after China and India. Impressive, eh?
To celebrate, why not watch Psy’s Gangnam Style! Yeah, I know…it’s so three months ago, but seeing as it was the first video to hit 1 billion views it seems appropriate. Enjoy, and kudos to YouTube!
