Wondering what to blog about is becoming an increasing headache for many business people. In this series, we take a look at some key areas of inspiration to help trigger ideas for your next blog post. This time, we look at jargon busting.
There must be very, very few businesses, industries and other commercial concerns that haven’t developed at least a few terms of their own jargon.
Depending on how much jargon exists in your own business area, a “jargon buster” piece could be anything from a one-off blog post to a series running to several articles.
Obviously all such jargon must be that with which your readers/customers have to deal, but from there on you are working to an open brief.
How to describe jargon
You know your readers/customers, so you need to adjust your definitions of your business’s jargon appropriately. That won’t be hard for you.
Think about the terms you and your colleagues use every day, and how they might impact on your readers/customers.
Are they really as self-explanatory as they seem to you, or would they perhaps cause confusion for someone not familiar with your business?
What jargon to describe
It goes without saying that the jargon you write about in your blog posts should be that which your readers/customers are likely to come up against in their dealings with you and the service/products you provide.
If you’re not sure how to go about defining your business’s jargon, here’s an idea that would be useful all around…
Ask your best customer to help you out here
Sort out a list of the terms relating to your business which are most likely to confuse your readers/customers, then ask one of your favorite customers to do an “interview” with you.
This option could even result in a humorous post which is even more likely to capture your readers’ attention.
Should your business happen to be in the hospitality sector as a restaurant, these articles will give you a laugh plus some inspiration, I hope!

Never mind the laughs: jargon matters
I know I shouldn’t laugh at jargon as much as I do because it forms a key part of many people’s working lives.
And where you can provide some very helpful jargon-busting information within your own industry, profession or business, you will be doing your readers/customers a big favor.
