Twitter has become a place for people to connect and get information quickly during emergencies. To facilitate the speed of information, today Twitter announced the launch of Twitter Alerts.
Twitter says the alerts feature “brings us one step closer to helping users get important and accurate information during emergencies, natural disasters or when other communications services aren’t accessible.”
While some might argue that faster information can sometimes lead to negative consequences, the general public will not be able to send out alerts. Twitter provided guidelines for how organizations should use the alerts systems and limited organizations eligible to send out out alerts to:
law enforcement and public safety agencies;
emergency management agencies;
city and municipal governments, as well as their agencies and representatives;
county and regional agencies, providing services to cities and municipalities;
and select state, federal, and national agencies and NGOs.
The new feature is subscription based and alerts are pushed directly to users’ mobile devices. The caveat is that in order to receive notifications, subscribers must be using the Twitter app on their device.
