It’s been a month since SMW13 September, powered by Nokia — and as we look back, we still feel the rush of excitement from the week! From Larry King Live hosting George Takei to over 2500 Nokia Puck games being played, SMW13 gave us a little bit of everything.
Berlin helped literally connect it’s community to jobs with their first Jobs Fair. ART CONNECT returned pulling together a whole day of art-related social media content for Berlin’s creative crowd. Jacob Applebaum shared his thoughts on NSA surveillance, while Bisi Alimi explored the role of social media in creating a new generation of advocates and activists. Berlin partnered with Nokia to daily give away coffee in their SMW VW Wagon and hosted a vintage clothing swap.
Chicago went outside the box with participants like Morningstar founder Joe Mansueto, Bill Rancic, and Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh. Twitter, Foursquare, Outbrain, Tumblr and LinkedIn talked about the power of paid social. Chicago’s hottest chefs discussed their “secret ingredient”, and gave attendees the chance to take photos with the Heisman Trophy.
SMW London put startups at the forefront with a Demo Day. In addition Virgin HQ opened their doors to the public for the first time, with Richard Branson fielding questions from aspiring startups, offering insight and advice the likes of which no early stage company could ignore. Multiple award winning BBC Director of Comedy, Will Saunders, assembled an expeditionary force of well-known and fresh comedic talent. Featuring Sanderson Jones, Abandoman, Lee Kern and Steve Pretty, Just in Beta was the perfect way to release the tension of a busy Social Media Week.
In Bogotá, former Colombian President Andres Pastrana Arango launched a Presidential Digital Library, releasing videos and footage from his presidency that were never before public and encouraging more governmental transparency. R SQUARE debuted SMW Mumbai, bringing us to India for the first time. Margaret Atwood helped kick off SMW Toronto, sharing insights from her writing and process.
LA truly brought a unique second screen experience by hosting a series of events around the topic and bringing in Pretty Little Liars’ Shay Mitchell and a special Larry King Live taping. Kicking off the week, they hosted the top 25 in social, including attendees like Amy Smart and the founders of SnapChat. They then closed out the week with a dunk tank at their Closing Party.
Nokia set up charging stations throughout Berlin, London, LA, and Mumbai. Arches were seen in LA and London, creating a very unique experience for attendees to view the latest products.
