Test Of Revamped Facebook Messenger For Android Expanding; IOS Coming Soon

MessengerTestiOSConversation650 The revamped Facebook Messenger for Android that the social network began testing late last month is being rolled out to more users, and what Facebook is calling “the new Messenger experience” will find its way to iOS users, as well, according to a post on Newsroom.

There was no word on timing for testing of the iOS app, but Facebook did release some screenshots, which can be seen above and below.

The new features for the Android app, which will be tested with a “limited number” of users, include:

  • The Messenger icon appears next to the names of friends who are currently using Messenger, so that users know who will receive their messages instantly.
  • Contacts who are not Facebook friends can be reached via text message through Messenger.
  • Navigation changes include the ability to tap across the top of the app or swipe left and right to view recent conversations, lists of people users have messaged, and settings.

Facebook said in the Newsroom post announcing the expanded test:

As more and more people use Facebook to connect with their friends on mobile, we are focused on building the best mobile products. Facebook messaging started as a desktop chat experience, but when it comes to messaging on mobile, people want something faster and lighter-weight.

Starting today, we’re testing an update to Messenger on Android that makes it a faster and more reliable mobile-to-mobile messaging experience.
