I’m really hoping that none of our readers have planned their Valentine’s Day to the brim yet because we’ve just uncovered something really spectacular. Hidden away in Soho’s Broadwick Street, you’ll find that Basemate Sate have a unique and tantalising Valentine’s day menu. This cocktail and dessert bar just keeps on giving and we can now unfurl our own love story with the deliciously creative and suave establishment. 

Join The Crowd

This place is perfect for the weekday when you want a good catch-up with a close friend, colleague or partner. People were dotted around what I want to describe as a ‘den’. The place was not overcrowded nor deserted, which allowed for a calm, chatty and intimate atmosphere.

Scene It

At first, you may question whether you’re at the right location, but don’t be fooled, Basement Sate will feel like it’s a mile away from another world. The Speakeasy’s of the 1920s would get a run for their money. There isn’t a sign to indicate that you’ve arrived- once you make your way down some wooden steps and another green door, you will walk into a den of cool, stylish and utterly bespoke design.

The first thing to catch my eye was the floor  to ceiling wall behind the bar, holding different labels, sizes and colours of bottles, one after another. This added to the calm and cool demeanour of the entire establishment. The dim lights also added a touch of seductive sophistication.

Basement Sate

Pierre, the enthusiastic owner, made us feel comfortable and relaxed with his down to earth persona. When asked if the website is going live, he said ‘it isn’t. What’s the point?’ Everything you need you can know from their Facebook or a phone conversation. He sounds like he really wants to bring back over-the-phone communication, stepping away from the depths of obsessive social media and online sharing. The online platform he wants to use for now is Facebook. If you still feel the website should have something, keep your eyes peeled for the Google map update.

Keep an hear out over the next few months as he changes around the cocktail menu, so in future it can be updated every other month as they create new and exciting concoctions.


Taste Of Sweetness

When creating the menu Pierre worked along with the chef, so their creativity passed onto each other in terms of exciting and best-fitting ingredients, which manage to complement each other.

We tried the Wolfberry (£12) which had a strong kick of champagne with refreshing berries, also adorned with a small handful on the ice. If you’re a fan of Cahaca, rum and red port I’d definitely recommend this, plus an addition of elderflower syrup and champagne gives it the final sweet ending it needs. This cocktail went perfectly with the recommended Happy Unicorn (£9). The Happy Unicorn includes melting and smooth Kalingo dark chocolate, savoury macadamia nuts, equally smooth Gianduja cream, and sharp yuzu and thyme jelly.


Other treats we’d recommend are the Bakewell Something (£11), which includes Cognac, rum, red port, cherry liqueur and almond syrup, all combining to create the sharp sweetness of a Bakewell tart. For the perfect pairing go for the Orangette (£9), it has a hard but delicious biscuit base, the lemon is subtle yet creamy and we feel that the raspberry complements the flavour of the cocktail to perfection. If none of these call out to you, try Pierre’s favourite dessert, the Butterpuff Squash (£9), which uses spiced butternut cream, caramelised puff pastry, Dulcey foam, Ilanka chocolate sauce and candied chestnuts to create a magical treat.

Bakewell Something

If you’re still looking for somewhere to go on Valentine’s Day then Basement Sate has a special menu deal. The St Valentine’s pairing degustation menu, which is £38 for two people, has been carefully created and the ingredients are said to have aphrodisiac qualities, in particular raspberries, vanilla, chocolate and honey.
