Twitter Alerts Lets Users Get Emergency Information, Fast (SocialTimes)
Twitter has become a place for people to connect and get information quickly during emergencies. To facilitate the speed of information, Wednesday Twitter announced the launch of Twitter Alerts. Mashable
Public institutions and NGOs can send out emergency alerts via text message and push notifications in times of crisis. Users can sign up to receive emergency notifications from specific accounts, and will receive a text or push notification when that account sends a tweet it labels as an alert. ReadWrite Alerts viewed in the timeline will be highlighted with an orange bell so users can differentiate them from regular tweets. Last year, Twitter released a similar feature exclusively in Japan. The Verge Current agencies, as well as potential future applicants, are strictly admonished not to inundate users with unnecessary alerts, providing only vital crisis updates. “Twitter Alerts should not be used for general updates about your organization,” it writes, and tweeting fundraising requests or anything commercial is strictly forbidden. And in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, the name of a missing Brown University student went viral on Twitter after many users, including journalists, mistakenly identified him as a suspect.
