President Barack Obama’s attempt to make last night’s State of the Union address the most interactive in history was a bust. Not only were Obama administration officials forced to go on the offensive against a rumored hack by the notorious group Anonymous, only 190 people had used the hashtag #WHChat over a seven-hour period Tuesday, according to an analysis by the social media metrics firm Hashtracking. Mashable U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., was a little thirstier than he anticipated during his fired-up response to the State of the Union address. After stealing a quick, yet somewhat awkward nip of water from a fun-sized bottle off-camera, Twitter users were quick to comment. CBS News On CNN, Wolf Blitzer was captured saying, “uh oh” as Rubio put the water bottle down again, and gifs of the moment immediately popped up on Twitter. Rubio, however, acknowledged the incident in a lighthearted post-game tweet of his own — with a picture of the water bottle in question, along with the hashtag #GOPResponse. Twitter Blog On Twitter, the ebb and flow of tweets per minute illustrates some reactions from the rest of us. The highest spikes in conversation occurred when Obama discussed middle class opportunities and minimum wage, gun violence victims and need for legislation and early childhood education. CNN
As Obama spoke, citizens around the country were tapping away at keyboards, posting and sending messages — public and private — characterizing their own view of how the union, and its president, are faring. That endless and instantaneous conversation — and it is only going to grow more constant in the decades to come — is the contemporary reality to which each president must now adjust, the fresh fact of civic life. It is, in a fundamental way, the new state of the union.

Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop accused of killing three people in a deadly revenge plot against the Los Angeles Police Department, has garnered support online from those sympathizing with his motives, CBS Sacramento reports. The station reports one Facebook page has gone as far as proclaiming Dorner for President. Mashable On Tuesday afternoon, law enforcement officials asked reporters to stop tweeting because a deluge of Twitter updates put officers in danger. While Dorner apparently engaged in an extended shootout with officers in Big Bear Lake, Calif., the official Twitter account for the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office posted this message: “The sheriff has asked all members of the press to stop tweeting immediately. It is hindering officer safety.#Dorner — SB District Attorney (@sbcountyda) February 12, 2013. KTAR Fake Twitter accounts are all the rage, but someone has created a fake account for Dorner. The account, @Chris_Dorner_, has a profile that simply reads “Catch Me If you Can :) ” and has tweeted several pictures, all of which have been jokes.
