After you lose a bunch of weight, you probably want to get rid of all those fat clothes. You don’t want to go back to that size. But if you keep a pair of your old pants or a dress, you might avoid sliding back into old habits.
If you purge all your fat clothes, you deny you were ever overweight. After you get to your ideal weight, you might slide back into old eating habits. Gregg McBride, who lost 250 pounds and kept it off, writes in Psychology Today about his experience. He suggests that fat clothes are trophies of what you accomplished. Don’t throw all of them away:
Instead, I suggest not only accepting your past, but embracing it. Keep it as a part of who you are — and wear it as a gold medal ribbon that indicates you’re not only a survivor, but a thriver.
Don’t just save these clothes in a box. Put that outfit in your closet along with your current clothes. Every time you see it, you’ll remember how hard you worked to get to where you are. That reminder just might prevent you from eating that extra brownie.
