Mama Musings: Love is a Gift

Love is a Gift I’ve been a mama for a little over twenty years. Between the both of my kiddos, I’ve survived nineteen first days of school, one bout of chicken pox, umpteen colds, flus, and ear infections, 150+ meltdowns, 17 hosted slumber parties, Barney and Friends, Dora the Explorer, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and 5 cellphones. And that is just the appetizer. None of this matters, though, when it comes to my children. I love them more than words can express, and I feel so very blessed to be able to be a mom to a 20 year old and a 10 year old who bring me joy on the daily. My kids are my everything, and despite the fact that one of them has flown the coop and has started his own life hundreds of miles away, he’s still my baby and always will be. Love is a gift that keeps on giving. And it’s a gift that I covet with an open heart.

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 10.08.42 AMIn the daily goings on of life, we can forget to tell those closest to us how we feel. We can get caught up in the latest breaking news, global epidemic, and latest celebrity divorce—life is that way. But we always must take time out to show those we care and love that we appreciate them. One of my goals this year was to be more expressive and attentive to the emotional needs of those around me, so this year, I’ve been all about the love. My tween daughter can tell you that she now pulls away from my hugs and doesn’t tell me she loves me as much as she used to, but that hasn’t stopped me from holding her tighter and telling her several times a day that I love her. And deep down inside even though she acts like she doesn’t like it, she does. And she will remember that her mama was affectionate, even when it wasn’t reciprocated.

THAT is what love’s about. It’s not tit-for-tat, or with conditions, nor is it perfect. It weathers storms, bridges gaps, and heals wounds. And love is always on time.
