To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s “Ready” campaign, which prepares people for disasters, the federal agency has launched a new Facebook page. The page’s launch also coincides with National Preparedness Month, which is only days away.
According to the Facebook page, Ready “is a national public service advertising (PSA) campaign designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural and man-made disasters. The goal of the campaign is to get the public involved and ultimately to increase the level of basic preparedness across the nation.” It encourages Americans to build an emergency supply kit, create a family emergency plan, and be informed about the types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.
The people at FEMA put together the infographic below, which is chock full of statistics about disasters from 2003 to 2013. On the social media front, the Ready campaign has 56,818 Twitter followers (as of the time this article was written), and there are upwards of 25,000 National Preparedness Community members. The National Preparedness Community is an online community that brings together people to ready for disasters. So far, 298 people “Like” the Ready Facebook page (at the time of this posting).
