How Iraq’s Leader Lost Everything




This week, after American forces struck Islamic State positions near Erbil to protect nearby refugees and U.S. personnel, a political crisis in Baghdad suddenly seemed as dangerous as the battle in northern Iraq.

After Iraqi President Fuad Maasoum on Monday announced that he had named a new prime minister to succeed Nuri al-Maliki, Maliki was angrily defiant, describing his ouster as a “dangerous violation” of the constitution and pledging to “fix the mistake.”
