Some managers are great interviewers…and some are lousy. If you encounter the latter, you might get the job if you ask the interviewer the right questions.
If the interview seems too short or just is not going well, ask a few key questions at the end. Ask a Manager has some great suggestions to save an awkward situation like this:
I’d ask, “What else can I tell you about me to help you figure out if this is the right fit?” And if that still doesn’t get them asking reasonable questions, I’d follow it up with, “Tell me more about the role and what’s most important to you in the person you’re hiring.” And other things designed to help you both figure out if this is the right fit — “How will you measure the success of this person six months in?” and so forth.
You’re steering the conversation back to relevant job qualifications. These questions also help the interviewer apply your skills to the open position. The interviewer might be relieved you’re helping out and you’ll come off well—which could lead to getting hired.
