Just in time for the premiere of ABC’s hit talent competition The Voice, coach and lead vox for Maroon5 Adam Levine decided to pick a fight with Lady Gaga.
“Ugh..recycling old art for a younger generation doesn’t make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher.”
— Adam Levine (@adamlevine) September 20, 2013
It wouldn’t be the first time Levine expressed his distaste for Lady Gaga. According to SheKnows, Levine was among those who accused Gaga of recycling and repackaging Madonna circa Vogue with her 2011 hit single Born This Way.
Levine didn’t call Gaga out by name but his pot-shot came just a couple days after Gaga went on a Twitter rant about her latest single Applause and being an artist. Gaga had only this to say:
“uh oh guys the art police is here”
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) September 21, 2013
This response from Gaga, whose social media strategy that has become a case study for social media success, seems to have inspired the hashtag #artpolice, which is being used by her fans to defend her honor. She hasn’t had much else to say on the topic but apparently, Levine wasn’t satisfied:
“by the way, im NOT an artist. i sing in a band and i make music with my friends.”

While Levine is definitely not wanting for fans with nearly 4.5 million Twitter followers and a hit prime time television show, it’s not a stretch to say he’s probably creating controversy as a way to generate media coverage and mentions of said show. The controversy probably doesn’t hurt Gaga either, since her latest album ARTPOP is due for release in November.
Here we have a classic case of celebrity feuding to drum up buzz for their latest projects. Hey they do it for the applause, right?
