We were lucky enough to meet with Tessa at the recent Emirates Festival of Literature in Dubai. Part recipe book, part family stories and cultural vignette, Tessa’s books take you on a culinary and historical journey. Each book she has written is a wonderful celebration of food, culture and family.
1. You self-published your first book and then met your publisher. Can you tell us about this process and how long it took you? Yes I self-published, because actually, I wrote to about 45 publishers once I had finished the whole book. I sent them a couple of recipes and photos. None of them were interested. It seemed natural then, for me to self-publish. I wanted at least one finished copy for myself. It must have taken me about two years. With my printed book then (Twelve – a Tuscan cookbook), I met my publisher at a book fair. They loved it and took it on immediately.
2. Was it your mother that inspired your initial interest and passion of cooking? My mother had a large part in inspiring me. We always had lovely, interesting dishes in our house. My father also had his role in bringing wonderful food into the house. Also, my love of travel and seeing what people in different countries do.
